Lister Elevator Shaft
Client:

The Lister Block in Hamilton, Ontario was constructed in 1923 and was the first indoor commercial mall in Canada. The renovation of the historical building, managed by Greenferd Construction Inc., has been challenging due to early 20th Century construction. The existing elevator shaft posed many challenges installing a modern elevator. Due to original concrete offsets and tolerances, steel brackets had to be designed and installed to support the elevator rails to ensure proper and safe operation of the elevator car.
The challenge was to design a strong support structure that will resist the elevator impact loads and provide adequate clearances for the elevator ropes. The other challenge was to design structural components under 200 lb in order for the installers to erect the structural members in the tight and hard to access shaft.
The installation of the structural floor supports was installed by the qualified workers of Thompson Miller Industrial Corp. Together, JADE Engineers design and Thompson Millers’ expertise combined to install the structural floor supports on schedule.
